Multi-year techno-economic assessment of proposed zero-emission hybrid community microgrid in Nigeria using HOMER

This paper presents a novel use of the HOMER Software for multi-year economic, environmental, and energetic assessment proposed multi-source standalone renewable microgrid. A rural-but-rapidly-commercializing community in Nigeria's middle belt was used as case study, with an average power demand 975 kW consumption 23.028 MWh/day. generation mix flat-plate photovoltaic (PV) array (3 MW nominal), concentrated solar thermal (CSP, 9 small hydropower (SH, up to 200 kW), battery storage (200 strings), system converter (2.5 nominal) using Oshin River recommended optimal minimizing cost electricity (LCOE) HOMER. diesel-based also simulated multiyear analysis 25-year period shows that Net Present Cost (NPC) $55.7 million microgrid is vastly superior $408 diesel microgrid, LCOE $0.26 $1.01 per kWh respectively. The saved 7540 metric tons CO2 year emissions. results study indicate economically environmentally alternative generators long term, deserving consideration similar applications.
